How it Works
1. Enrollment:
a.) If you want a face-to-face meeting, a representative from KCP&L or
Energy Curtailment Specialists, Inc. (KCP&L’s sole authorized
demand response agent) will come to your location to explain the
program, review your facility and estimate your MPower payment.
b.) Choose how many possible Curtailment Events you want to participate
in (maximum of 10). Receive higher payment for more events.
c.) Choose the number of years. Receive increasing bonus payments for signing up for
multiple years!
d.) To be eligible, you must be able to commit at least 25 kW to MPower.
2. Metering: You need an interval meter at your facility. If your electric meter is non-interval, KCP&L will install one for you, free of charge.
3. Curtailment Events:
● Curtailment Event season is from June through September.
● A Curtailment Event can be called only on non-holiday weekdays from noon to 10 p.m., and for a maximum of 8 hours.
4. Planning for a Curtailment Event: You should put together a “reduction action plan” that outlines who in your company is responsible for making electric reductions in the instance that a Curtailment Event is called. Having a plan will ensure that you carry out your reductions in an orderly manner with the full cooperation of your employees.
Potential reduction strategies include shutting off equipment or processes, turning off lighting, easing back on air conditioning, and if applicable, utilizing a generator. If you have an energy management system, reductions can be made from a central location.
5. Notice of a Curtailment Event: When a Curtailment Event is called, the individuals identified as MPower contacts at your company will be notified by email, phone and fax. Typically, you will receive courtesy
day-ahead notice*, specifying for which hours a reduction is necessary.
When your MPower contacts receive notice, they will implement your reduction action plan, going down the list of who in your company needs to be aware of the Curtailment Event and what reduction strategies are to be implemented.
* Minimum required notice is 4 hours before the Curtailment Event begins.
6. During a Curtailment Event: Your facility should have all reductions in effect 15 minutes before the start of the Curtailment Event. Make sure that staff is aware of this event and does not turn anything on or up that should remain off or reduced. If you have questions during the event, contact KCP&L or Energy Curtailment
Specialists.
7. After the Curtailment Event: You should maintain reductions until 5 minutes after the end of the event. At this point in time, you may return to your usual state of electric consumption.
8. Performance: Your performance is determined by how much you reduce your electric demand from a predetermined baseline. Your baseline is your average peak demand from June through September of the year prior.
Your actual performance is compared to the kW commitment you made in your MPower agreement.
9. Payment: Your company will earn 2 types of payments, via a check or a before-tax credit on your electric bill, for performing to your committed level during events:
| Participation Payment = $45.00 per pledged kW* |
| Event Payment = $0.35 per pledged kWh reduced during an event |
*This payment amount is representative of a commitment to 10 possible events for a 5-year term.
Payment amounts decrease with 3-year and 1-year commitments.

* Participation Payments are based on a commitment level of 10 events.
* Event Payments are paid based on total Curtailment Event reduction hours during MPower period ($0.35 per kWh). This example is based on the average over the last 4 years
of 6 events for 6 hours each.
